Kitchen Cabinet Doors
The kitchen cabinet door is, without doubt, the
most visible feature of a kitchen cabinet, and perhaps
the entire kitchen atmosphere. Selecting door style
and door composition will directly affect that feature.
Style options on most kitchen cabinet doors include
raised or recessed panel doors, flat fronts, bead
board, glass front or a classic deco-form door.
When it comes to kitchen cabinet doors the three
most common door style options are:
Raised panel, Recessed panel, or Slab.
A slab is a flat door with no raised
or recessed profile. Flat-panel doors and drawers
are simple and chic, while a framed glass door offers
a stylish window to the contents within. The items
showing through can be treated as a form of artistic
visual and can be quite exciting.
When it comes to the composition of kitchen cabinet
doors, wood is an obvious and popular choice. Wood
door options include the classic U.S. species of
Oak, Maple, Hickory, Birch, Pine, Alder, Cherry,
and Poplar. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and metal
are also viable door options, but one should take
care that the doors, fronts, and cabinet veneers
match or complement one another.
Upgrading a kitchen or completely replacing one will
require a selection of hinges and hardware for the
kitchen cabinet doors. Although that would seem obvious,
it can be overlooked. Hinges and hardware with add
or subtract from the style and feel you want to create
with your cabinetry and most visually obvious-the
kitchen cabinet door.
-On frameless cabinets, which have
no face frame, the hinges will attach to the door
and the side or end panels of the cabinet box.
-Framed cabinets, with a frame around
the front edges, feature hinges attached to the door
and the frame.
There are two basic types of hinges for kitchen
cabinet doors-traditional and European. Traditional,
or exposed, hinges include barrel
hinges, which are the self-closing variety. These
spring-loaded hinges are fully exposed and rest on
the front frame of a framed cabinet. Knife hinges
are partially embedded hinges that are either fully
or almost fully visible on the face of the cabinet
frame. These types of hinges provide a full 180 degrees
for door opening.
Concealed or hidden hinges-also
called European hinges-are screwed
into recesses in the backs of the door and the side
panel or face frame of the cabinet and are not visible
when the door is closed. Most concealed hinges are
self-closing, easily adjusted, and limit the door
opening to 110 degrees. It is important to keep in
mind that the type of cabinet usually determines
the type of hinge. A framed cabinet with partially
overlaying doors and exposed frames will usually
have knuckle, knife, or concealed hinges. Full overlay
doors on frameless cabinets will always have concealed
hinges.
The basic finish options on kitchen cabinet doors
are- laminate, veneers and wood. Laminate and veneer
are popular option because they provide durability
and are almost impossible to tell from wood. Laminates
and veneers can be made to look just like a bright
painted surface, texturized finish or natural wood.
Laminates however, cannot be shaped and molded, so
they are limited to more basic kitchen cabinet door
styles.
Wood finishes have advanced to the point that they
no longer need to be regularly waxed. The surfaces
of the finished kitchen cabinetry doors are durable
heat-catalyzed polyurethane finishes. Care includes
regular dusting and, at most, a once-a-year furniture-grade
polishing. Superior finishes can feature a number
of qualities, including sealers to protect the wood
and ultra violet inhibitors to resist the fading
effects of light exposure that enter through windows.
Kitchen Cabinet Doors are available in many wood
species. Cabinets can be made from dozens of woods
including:
- Oak, Maple, Pine, Cherry, Hickory, Poplar, Alder
and Birch. Hickory and Oak are the hardest and the
heaviest. Cherry, Birch and Maple are considered
to be well suited to cabinetry. Less expensive and
more plentiful woods such as Alder and Poplar work
best with glazed finishes used in creating an antique
look. Pine is a soft wood that can be more prone
to dents and scratches.
Wood is a beautiful, durable and very stylish solution

of kitchen cabinet doors:
- Laminates, wood, particleboard, plywood and fiberboard.
From traditional oak paneled or warm oak wood look
to the stark minimalist modern look our kitchen cabinet
doors bring it all to life. Traditional cabinet styles
are characterized by ornate accents and wooden finish
in warm tones such as cherry or honey or oak. Contemporary
kitchen cabinets come in clean lines and simple geometry
- the focus is on simplicity and style. Embellished
with glass shelves and trimmings, cabinets can make
a design statement. Glass doors can make such a statement.
Glass kitchen cabinet doors are visibly different
from solid wood doors, they tend to automatically
attract attention. Our Apple Valley dealers will
help you use them to create a focal point-upper (or
wall) cabinets that flank a sink or range are attractive
options. The upper section of a full wall of cabinets
breaks the solidity.
Apple Valley Woodworks offers stock cabinets (Liberty
Collection)in standard sizes; are easy to install
but have minimized options. On the other hand, custom-built
kitchen cabinets are created for individual spaces
and interiors. These kitchen cabinet doors are usually
of solid wood and can be higher budget projects.
Semi custom stock cabinets can be created from pre-determined
options of size and style. They offer some amount
of flexibility.
You can add also add some useful utilities to enhance
the utility value of the kitchen cabinets. These
are features that should work in a blended design
with the kitchen cabinet doors:
.
A microwave shelf that can be incorporated in the
cabinetry so that it doesn't encroach into your countertop
space.
.
Other appliances such as toasters and blenders can
also find place in the cabinet racks.
.
Pull-out containers for waste and trash so that it
can be conveniently out of sight.
.
Drawers that can double up as cutting boards or a
pull out ironing board.
.
Wine racks or Lazy Susans allow you to make best
use of space
.
Pantry racks that swing out can make for easier handling
of items within the deep shelves of the cabinets.
Any choice of kitchen cabinet doors requires smart
consideration since they have to last many years.
It is essential that the quality of materials and
construction is impeccable, or you are faced with
stuck drawers and shabby laminates in a few years.
The joinery must be well crafted and the movement
must be smooth and noiseless. Kitchen cabinet doors,
drawers and pull- outs must have high quality metal
glides that should allow them to be opened smoothly.
When kitchen cabinets are old and jaded you may
decide to replace them completely or go with a facelift.
The latter can be nicely accomplished by replacing
the kitchen cabinet doors. This can give your kitchen
a new look. Apple Valley's kitchen cabinet doors
come in a variety of materials ranging from wood
and vinyl to laminated material to unusually exotic
veneers.
Kitchen drawers are an important feature of most
kitchen cabinets since they allow you to put away
odds and ends in a neat and orderly manner. Kitchen
drawers with built-in compartments for cutlery, knives,
flatware and kitchen utensils are particularly useful.
They help in storing tools too. Drawers will obviously
blend or accent the kitchen cabinet doors selected.
Some simple yet effective ideas for new kitchen
drawers:
.
A pantry drawer is ideal to store canned or boxed
groceries.
.
Deep drawers are needed to store pots, pans and cutlery.
.
A large drawer to store cleaning brushes and sponges
is a good idea.
.
Special drawers for cutlery will prevent hunting
expeditions for the knives and forks.
There's no doubt, when walking into a kitchen, the
first thing you will notice is the kitchen cabinet
doors. The kitchen cabinet doors are the most prominent
feature of the kitchen. They highlight color, style,
texture, and dimension. The greater portion of a
budget will be invested in the kitchen cabinet doors.
